Shri Chitrapur Math
Shri Chitrapur Math is the central Math (community temple) for the Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin sect. This Math is located at Shirali in the Bhatkal Taluk in North Kanara district of Karnataka and has been there since 1757. The other Maths of this community are located in Gokarn, Karla, Mangalore and Mallapur.
The chief deity worshipped in this Math is Shri Bhavanishankar (shown in the picture right, below) who is a form of Shiva. The other 6 sanctorums of the temple are of the Samadhis of the previous GuruSwami's of the community. Daily Puja is carried out at the shrine of Bhavanishankar as well as the other Swamijis.
As of 2016 Shri Sadyojat Shankarashram Swamiji has been the head of the Math having ascended the Peetha in February 1997. Shree Sadyojat Shankarashram Swamiji is the eleventh of this lineage of Gurus which began in 1708.
The Chitrapur Math is a 300 years old religious place at Shirali in Karnataka, India. This project is a redevelopment/extension of the religious center of the Chitrapur Saraswat community with the Head office and residence of ‘Mathadhipati’ that is the religious Head of the community.
The project was to be ready for the Tercentenary celebrations of the Math. The project had to be completed in phases over a period of three years due to heavy rainfall in the region. The project had to be meticulously planned for the civil work as well as interior shrines and other interior requirements. This had to be organized without disturbing the daily rituals of the deities. The character of the original structure had to be retained and applied to the extended areas.
The main temple hall has been extended and a balcony (sajja) added for Swamiji from the mazennine floor. Three new Shrines of Devi Shrivalli Bhuvaneshwari, Maha Ganapati and Adi Shankaracharya and new “Guru Paduka Sannidhi” where Padukas of HH Parijnanashram Swamiji III, are added in the main temple. The character of the old building and shrines are replicated in all the additions, thus blending in seam lessly.
Thanks to the efforts by Chitrapur Saraswats in the US, a postal stamp has been released to commemorate the Tercentenary year of Shri Chitrapur Math. The release of stamp coincided with the culmination of the historic Guru Jyoti Pada yatra.
