Phadke House
Mr. Atul Phadke, a retired Physics professor, and a friend requested AVA to design a simple house for him at a small town 1 hour away from Ratnagiri. His brief had two points. First, the budget is restricted and second most important criterion: The temperature inside the house should be at least five degrees lower than outside, considering the hot and humid climate of the place.
The design of the house was finalized very quickly. an ‘L’ shaped verandha to cut off the heat, transfer to the living space, two bedrooms and a study room for him as he is always experimenting with new ways to teach physics.
Provision for expansion upwards is an option kept open. To fulfill the second criterion, Deep-set windows with vertical fins and overhangs were designed. This gave bay windows as well as helped to cut off glare and harsh sun and rain. All the windows and doors are provided with ventilators, thus enabling cross-ventilation, which in turn helps to drop the temperature in the house. The client was very pleased at the result. Local Jambha stone (chira) is used for the bungalow and compound wall. The plantation plan is made to shade the house. A rural touch is what appeals to the eye.
