Hotel and multiplex at Nanded
The VITS Hotel and wedding facility and E square cinema forms a new landmark in the rapidly developing urban centre of Nanded, Maharashtra.
This development had four distinct uses, viz. a hotel, a pair of restaurants, a wedding facility and a cinema. The design for the scheme places lift and service towers at the edge of the building as ‘servant spaces’, with the two access points for the six-storey to better organize pedestrian traffic. The scheme comprises a 33-room hotel, a banquet hall for weddings having an area of 880 m² accommodating 600 people, two 80-seat restaurants, and 1,200 m² cinema with four screens.
Detailed design work started in January 2014. The project was completed in early 2017, and was formally opened at a ceremony in June 2017.
The building is rectangular in shape, with the hotel forming the lower two floors of the building and the wedding hall and restaurant floor with its associated support facilities forming the intermediate element, with a dramatic atrium connecting the two.
Poised on the top of the building, the cinema is accommodated in a brick box.
The tower is divided into three zones. The lower levels accommodate hotel, the intermediate levels the restaurants and wedding hall with an open plan arrangement to facilitate flexibility. The upper part of the building accommodates the cinema.
The major programmatic functions within the design are architecturally expressed through the separation and articulation of each element. The hotel rooms are contained within a floating block, with a gridded facade identifying each room. Above the hotel block, the intermediate levels of restaurants and wedding hall space are identified as double-height floors behind large expanses of clear glazing.
At the top levels, the expressed structure with its vertical shafts in the front, serves to visually lift the cinema element, while lending an appropriate sense of scale to the composition as a whole. The four screens are planned in pairs with a total seating capacity of 714. The service elements are distinct from the main form of the building, forming a slender vertical element attached to the block. These contain two cores, as well as emergency stairs and service risers.
